Sharon Haver helps women entrepreneurs and small business owners be seen so that they can step into their star power.

As an internationally recognized style expert + personal brand success strategist, with a combined background in the business of marketing, entrepreneurship and visual messaging, Sharon helps women who want to be seen as an influencer get the high-level clients they want.

Sharon Haver

Sharon Haver

Q & A

Leadership Girl (LG): What is the name of your business?

Sharon Haver: FocusOnStyle.com

LG: Tell us about your business…

Sharon: I have a three-decade career in both style + business including New York photography fashion stylist for 15 years, bootstrapping web entrepreneur, speaker, spokesperson, and the bootstrapping founder of FocusOnStyle.com, online since 1999.

My vast style background, marketing degree and entrepreneurial spirit brought a wealth of opportunities including starring in my own Macy’s TV commercial and headlining a lifestyle book alongside President Jimmy Carter and Gloria Steinem. My weekly Scripps Howard News Service fashion advice column was distributed to 400 newspapers.

I have been featured in hundreds of television, radio, print, and online media such as Real Simple, CNN, Martha Stewart, Oprah, ELLE, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and more.

I am the creator of Simply Amazing Headshots, the C’est Chic Crash Course, author of StyleWORD, Fashion Quotes For Real Style, and host of the 7 Days to Amazing Podcast.

LG: Who do you serve?

Sharon: I’m dedicated to helping other lady bosses and their businesses get out there so they can step into their STAR Power and get high-level clients and opportunities.

LG: What is your website’s url?
LG: How did you get into your current business? What opportunities or needs did you see?

Sharon: I became a stylist when an art director hired me for a 3-week shoot in St. Maarten. Upon my return to New York, word got out and photographers kept hiring me as a stylist. I upped my day rate ten-fold! I guess being a stylist pursued me rather than my pursuing it as a career. I worked steadily as a New York fashion stylist for 15 years!

Even though I had fab jobs and went on glamorous locations, it never felt “right.” Rather than creating brand images and working with models and actresses, I wanted to help everyday women feel great about themselves.

So I pitched a fashion advice column to the Scripps Howard News Service and they said yes! The “Focus on Style by Sharon Haver” column went out to 400 papers each week.

I left the newswire for a syndicator who screwed me. Long story short, rather than being on maternity leave I found myself with newspapers expecting my column. I got out of the bad deal and launched FocusOnStyle.com as a B2B site for my column in 1999 when my son was newborn.

The site took off in a big way.

I quickly learned everything I need to know to run an online business and it’s in its 18th year online. SEO became just as sexy as shoes to me, and who ever thought I would understand tech? But if it’s your business you must be well-versed in its operations, especially when starting out.

My “business getting” site suddenly became a go-to style site offering stylist advice to help you make the most of what you’ve got.

A few years ago, I felt a pull of wanting my business side to come forward.

I wanted to help other women entrepreneurs to fully be empowered with their strengths and be seen as not only a leader in their expertise but someone who had that certain something that made them shine over the masses.

Positioning IS the new currency.

You must stand out in a crowded market while being the best at being you. I call that stepping into your authentic STAR Power… helping women own that is what drives me.

It wasn’t easy for me.

Even though I have been on all sides of media, it was about making other people look good. So I finally took the big gulp and came out as the face of my brand. If I can do it, so can you… that’s the need I fill: helping you be the best at being you!

LG: What have been your biggest challenges?

Sharon: Seeing women who shortchange themselves and knowing I could help them thrive if they would only give themselves permission to be seen fully.

LG: What has been your Greatest Reward?

Sharon: Seeing clients and students unfold in their authentic style and watching their confidence and capabilities blossom.

LG: If you could change something, what would it be?

Sharon: I wish I could hold a magical mirror to other women entrepreneurs so they could see their magnificent worth and finally stop hiding and start celebrating themselves to fully step into their STAR Power.

LG: Who are your ideal clients?

Sharon: Smart, savvy, experienced woman who want to be the face of their brand and embrace the power of being the best at being themselves.

LG: Social Media, Yay or Nay?

Sharon: Yay.

LG: What is unique about your business?

sharon haverSharon: We live in such a fast-paced world now where first impressions are formed in just a few seconds. The Internet has made it so that every photo, every video, every visual image of us is just like our own magazine cover!

We go through over-crowded social media streams where we are positioned next to celebrities, thought leaders and industry leaders… how we show up is critical to our success.

Those who are seen as Influencers reap the awards, the others are just swiped over. It’s that simple. But don’t worry, anyone can have their influence match their credibility with some strategic tweaks.

I have the unique background of being a “two-headed monster,” equally versed in running and marketing a business as in style.

To me, it’s the holistic approach of actually walking my talk on every level that propels us to success.

All my tips come from my real world professional experience.

As a bootstrapping entrepreneur with a business degree in Marketing and a graduate of an extensive amount of business and personal development programs and high-level masterminds, my advice is based on how I’ve successfully run my online business since 1999.

Being a style expert and personal brand success strategist is the combination of getting your visual and brand message in sync.

Prior to be being the founder of FocusOnStyle.com, I was a well-known New York fashion stylist on major photo shoots for 15 years, where I styled everything from Vogue covers to advertising campaigns for cheesy products that I made look so good that you would actually want to buy them.

Empowering everyday women to think like a stylist to confidently dress themselves to shine was a dream, so I pitched a syndicated column where my fashion advice was distributed to 400 newspapers each week on the Scripps Howard News Wire.

The 7 Days to Amazing Podcast are conversations with guest experts, celebrities, and thought leaders including Carson Kressley, Alison Levine and Joan Juliet Buck to help you make your life, business and style even more amazing in the next week.

StyleWORD, Fashion Quotes For Real Style is the stylist express book for high-impact style and fashion advice that gets to the point. I am creator of The C’est Chic Crash Course,

Simply Amazing Headshots, and other personal development programs along with VIP celebrity business brand training for small business owners and fellow entrepreneurs.

I have been my own boss since I left my first “real” job at a press release distribution agency.

My well-seasoned career boils down to getting your message out there in a variety of ways.

I have a love/hate relationship with tech, and find running a successful online business just as fabulous as a new pair of shoes or what your font says about you.

Helping you and your business get out there is my passion.

Business is in my blood; style just happens to be my beat.

I speak my truth and go after it; let me lead you to do the same.

Featured Expert: Michelle Campbell

Michelle Campbell is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant and Founder/CEO of Time Value Accounting & Business Services, LLC. She has a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Finance from Florida International University in Miami, FL. Michelle has many years of experience navigating the waters of accounting and finance and has spent the majority of her career as the lead finance officer for non-profit educational institutions, including a major university and a national consumer advocacy organization.

Michelle Campbell

Michelle Campbell

Q & A

Leadership Girl (LG): What is the name of your business?

Michelle Campbell: Time Value Accounting & Business Services, LLC

LG: Tell us about your business…

Michelle: Time Value Accounting & Business Services specializes in helping small businesses to achieve growth and profits with accounting and consultancy competencies that allows business owners to concentrate on professional specializations. Time Value provides business owners with peace of mind by fulfilling finance-related compliance and assistance with tax savings and maximization of profits.

LG: Who do you serve?

Michelle: Time Value Accounting & Business Services serves the small business community as well as individuals with tax planning and tax resolution services. The small business community is varied and large and requires special assistance to remove common hurdles to growth and profit. The lack of training, mentorship and strategy is reflected in the number of business closures. Time Value wants to help overcome some of these hurdles by providing sound financial management and guidance to otherwise talented small business owners.

LG: What is your website’s url?

Michelle: www.timevalueaccounting.com

LG: How did you get into your current business? What opportunities or needs did you see?

Michelle: Short answer – I felt it was time for a promotion, so I decided to do it myself.

Long answer – We often wait for employers to provide us with the right opportunity or promotion, when in fact, in this day and age, we must take the initiative to do it ourselves. Some employers have good policies and promotion potential, but this is not often the case. I decided that I didn’t want to be on that hamster wheel anymore and to take my livelihood into my own hands.

LG: What have been your biggest challenges?

Michelle: Continuous learning in my industry is extremely important. We must complete 40 hours of CPE per year in order to enhance our knowledge and stay in compliance with federal and state regulations. As an entrepreneur, learning also includes competencies that are outside of my “comfort zone”. This is something I convey to my consulting clients on a regular basis in order to prepare them on their own journey.

LG: What has been your Greatest Reward?

Michelle: My greatest reward is being an actual profit-making business owner. Not because of the money necessarily, but because I have overcome being a shy introvert in order to achieve this goal. When I stop to think about where I am now compared to when I started, the thought is that I ACTUALLY have paying clients that count on me and trust me. I am grateful for this accomplishment.

Michelle CampbellLG: If you could change something, what would it be?

Michelle: Seeking a mentor in the early stages of my business would have been ideal. The lack of knowledge on how to find a mentor held me back from achieving growth at that time.

LG: Who are your ideal clients?

Michelle: I have clients from very different industries; seemingly nothing in common. For me, this difference makes life interesting. What I truly want in a client is one that listens and learns… and on time. I want to like my clients personally and I want them to like me. If we listen and respect each other, our business relationship will be enjoyable.

LG: Social Media, Yay or Nay?

Michelle: Social media is a given method of marketing and communication today. There is no getting past this fact of entrepreneurial life. The best we can do is to make it as enjoyable as possible.

LG: What is unique about your business?

Michelle: My business is unique because it is geared towards helping small businesses grow. Through our small business packages, we cover everything you need to be in compliance, which frees up your time to work on your business. Our higher-level services helps small businesses to grow and become enlightened in their business. This is our focus. We are not trying to be big CPA firms with expensive and out-of-reach everything. We are helping those who need it the most.

Featured Expert: Erin Edgar

Erin Edgar practices law as a licensed attorney in the state of North Carolina. She worked for many years in the non-profit sector, but she now has her own solo practice. Erin graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law and has received further training in mediation, collaborative negotiation and other forms of conflict resolution.

Erin became interested in law in high school while studying history. She continues to be fascinated by the common social and political elements and traditions that bind societies together. As she deepened her understanding, she began to appreciate the ways the law can be used for collaboration among diverse people and beliefs.

Q & A

Leadership Girl (LG): What is the name of your business?
Erin Edgar

Erin Edgar

Erin Edgar: The Law Office of Erin Baker Edgar, PLLC

LG: Tell us about your business…

Erin: I work to use the law for healing and protection of families, their assets and legacies. I serve clients throughout the Triangle and surrounding areas, and assist with legal needs of families in transition. My services range from creating wills to formulating custody agreements after a separation. My clients benefit from my empathic and compassionate listening style as well as my legal knowledge and competence.

LG: Who do you serve?

Erin: I serve primarily people in transition or those contemplating transition of some kind. This includes people going through divorce or separation, or others interested in developing a legacy, such as through a will or trust.

LG: What is your website’s url?

Erin: http://erinedgarlegal.com

LG: How did you get into your current business? What opportunities or needs did you see?

Erin: I worked in the non-profit sector for some time. I realized that, although rewarding, the work that I was doing did not address one of my fundamental passions, which is to help people identify legal options to assist them through life changes.

Many people, when faced with situations of sudden and drastic change, such as a separation, tend to give their legal power away. This is because they are not sure of what options are available to them. When they suddenly find themselves in conflict, they are not sure what they can legally ask for or are legally entitled to have or receive.

LG: What have been your biggest challenges?

Erin: My biggest challenges have been identifying when I could no longer be of assistance to clients. I have a personality that wants to care for and help people. When I find I can no longer assist someone (or when assisting them would no longer be in their best interest), it is my duty to let them know. My clients rely on me to interpret the law for them. It is sometimes hard to convince myself that I have done all I can do.

LG: What has been your Greatest Reward?

Erin: My greatest reward is that I am now able to exercise so much personal choice in my business. For example, I can practice law in the fields I am passionate about; I do not have limitations on the type of cases I can take set by others. That said, I have my own limitations and policies about client boundaries and my own rules about what kinds of matters I choose not to handle. However, these things are based on personal choice rather than handed down from a management entity.

LG: If you could change something, what would it be?

Erin: I would change the fact that I work at home for now. This is due to my business’s financial situation more than personal choice. As my business grows, I will have the funding to change this. Sometimes keeping that thought in my head does not make the multiple distractions of a home environment easier to bear.

Erin EdgarLG: Who are your ideal clients?

Erin: My ideal clients are families with children. The parents may have a disabled child they want to place in an educational environment and have questions about the school’s obligations. The parents in the family are contemplating their own inheritances and wish to make wills indicating who should receive their legacy. They also might want advice on drafting documents, such as living wills and powers of attorney, to signify their wishes should they be faced with financial or health problems. And if all of that weren’t enough, the husband and wife are separating and want to work together to make custody arrangements that are in their children’s best interests.

LG: Social Media, Yay or Nay?

Erin: Yay, when I can find the time. I notice that I get overwhelmed with other duties and put off posting to social media. I need to learn to make the time and have scheduled posts as well as limits on my own time that I spend; it can suck you in like a vacuum.

LG: What is unique about your business?

Erin: I strive to help clients through deep and lasting life changes and transformations that can be potentially very emotional. For these reasons, I want clients to feel safe coming to me and in sharing their potential vulnerabilities with me. I also encourage clients to work collaboratively with the opposing parties to cement change and meaningful transformation.

How Women Can Leverage the Relationships They Build

When it comes to building relationships, it seems that women do it better than anyone else. Most women know what to say to start and maintain a friendship or even a casual acquaintance relationship. Unfortunately, many women stop exactly at this point.

women relationshipsThey don’t go farther with the relationships in their life. They don’t know how to capitalize on the relationships in their life, and they end up missing vital opportunities because of this.

When it comes to women and relationships, the best thing that they can do is to leverage their relationships and turn them into opportunities for themselves as well as the other person involved. The problem starts to arise when women look at leveraging friendships as selfish and “fake.”

When two people become friends, the best outcome is the success for each. When one woman leverages her relationship with another individual, they both end up getting ahead, sometimes substantially so. The mutually supportive relationship can lead to more money for all parties involved, better job offers, and even networking opportunities that can lead to unstoppable outcomes. Women can leverage the relationship when desire and yearning for mutual success are involved. Partners succeed when they are open to opportunities that could help all the parties concerned.

Another issue that comes up with women and leveraging relationships is that most women don’t know how to go about this process smoothly and efficiently. The reality is that leveraging friendships is very easy, but one must stay attuned and open-minded to opportunities that present themselves.

When your intention is to help others’ succeed, then the partners could create opportunities or be open to opportunities that would benefit both parties. When women connect with the right partners, magical events start to show themselves, and the results are fantastic.

Leadership Girl: How did you get into your current business? What opportunities or needs did you see?

Michelle: From day one, after I opened my clinic, I was coaching practitioners to success by sharing what I was doing and what was working to get clients in the door. Over the years, I realized there was a much larger need within the industry and a gap; practitioners were coming out of school and had no idea what or how to get their businesses started.

Seeing a unique opportunity to fill this gap, I took the leap to full-time coach and business strategist serving practitioners around the globe.

Leadership Girl: What have been your biggest challenges?

Michelle: Moving from a brick and mortar business model to a virtual online business was a challenge. While I was able to apply my knowledge of business, I also had a gap to fill to learn more about digital marketing and social media and how to make it work for me.

Leadership Girl: What has been your Greatest Reward?

Michelle McGladeMichelle: I noticed how my clients look different after they work with me. I see not only the knowledge transformation, but also the outward change resulting from more confidence and success in getting clients in the door. This is the greatest reward.

Leadership Girl: If you could change something, what would it be?

Michelle: The wellness industry. I am looking to see alternative holistic options at the same level of Western medical care. To accomplish this, more leadership within the industry is required, leaders of successful wellness businesses.

Leadership Girl: Who are your ideal clients?

Michelle: I am a perfect fit for those practitioners within the wellness industry who have a big vision for themselves and are ready to take action towards that vision. Someone who knows inside they are meant for more, but seeks guidance from a coach who has been in their shoes and will provide the tough love needed to get results. Someone who has a vision but needs help breaking it down in to actionable steps and creating a strategy for success.

Leadership Girl: What is your website’s url?

Marilyn Cook: www.pawTree.com/MyAll4Paws

Leadership Girl: How did you get into your current business? What opportunities or needs did you see?

Marilyn Cook: Products were introduced to me by a friend, who is an Independent petPro, for my dogs. And after seeing benefits from several of the products, I knew I had to share this company with others. It is an investment in lives, cats, dogs, and humans, helping the bond between them thrive, longer. Being an Independent petPro allows one to choose full time, part time, anytime, any place opportunities to make a difference.

Leadership Girl (LG): What have been your biggest challenges?

Marilyn Cook: Somewhat challenging is the initial mention of making a change to switching to or adding pawTree products to consistent routine feedings and usage. Folks are typically open to talking about their pets or business, to trying samples, but hesitate to go ‘all in’ to see if they can make a difference that is satisfactorily affordable in their budget, disregarding the possibilities of benefits resulting in less visits to the Vet office, better health and spirit, home delivery, and recurring purchase/free shipping options.

Leadership Girl: What has been your Greatest Reward?

Marilyn Cook: It has been a joy to learn that through my reaching out to people and following up, growing relationships, pawTree has helped pets very quickly enjoy relief from food allergy, seasonal allergy, gastrointestinal issues, chronic ear issues, sore joints, and dry or dull coats, senior dog cognitive issues, and bladder health issues.

Leadership Girl: If you could change something, what would it be?

Featured Expert Marilyn CookMarilyn Cook: If pawTree decides to add an option of increased quantity and size of packaged products such as treats or dry foods, it would be welcomed by new and existing customers who have multiple dogs and cats benefiting from them.

Leadership Girl: Who are your ideal clients?

Marilyn Cook: All U.S. people who are dog and cat owners or fosters, and those businesses associated with pets that want to make a difference in the whole life of that pet and the bond between them and humans.

Leadership Girl: Social Media, Yay or Nay?

Marilyn Cook: Yay – Media makes a good intro and broad connection, but cannot sufficiently compare to the benefits of the personal contact, discussion, and followup reactions face-to-face with pets and people.
