Excuses Will Get You Sympathy, Not Clients

~by Haley Lynn Gray~

Excuses. We all have them. They’re kind of like butt holes. They also have the same effect on our lives and our businesses.

It’s funny how a single excuse is no reason for alarm. But like the tiny ripples on a pond after you’ve thrown a stone in the water, each one has a far-reaching effect. Afterwards, we can tell very clearly what the effects were, but at the time, you just think it’s an isolated thing.

Take, for instance the assassination of the Austrian Arch Duke during the Centenary of the Battle of the Somme. I’m sure that no one at the time thought it would lead to World War I and the death of 17 million people.

It just happens so easily. Maybe today you don’t feel like working on something or showing up or getting your work done. That’s okay. Occasionally, you do need to take a day off. Our human bodies need rest. If you’re an adult, you really do need 7-9 hours of sleep every day. You also need time off from your business, to recharge, once a week.

But that doesn’t mean taking multiple days off every week or working less than a standard workday if you truly want to see progress in your business. The reality is that when you first start your business, you’ll need to work more hours each day. Then, as things start to take off and you’re able to hire employees, you’ll be able to work fewer hours a day and fewer days per week.

Excuses are easy. Actually doing the work? That can be a rough, lonely process. You might want to cry and scream, but it’s the hard work that brings in new clients and brings in the bucks for your business.

So stop making the excuses. Catch yourself and redirect. Get back on track for what you know you need to do. If you have trouble, get an accountability partner, or better yet, a business coach. You’ll be glad you did.
