I have a little confession. I have been known to occasionally serve my kids cereal for dinner, and sometimes they get frozen chicken nuggets too. Why? So I can get more accomplished.
I’m bound by this little thing called the space-time continuum, and I am forever trying to get more things done than will actually fit in a regular day. That means I am always trying to find ways to save time. For example, I sometimes serve cereal to the children for dinner. To go along with the cereal, they get a big bowl full of grapes, and something else that is super easy and can be on the table in minutes. That means that I’m not spending an hour or more trying to figure out who is getting what for dinner.
This type of shortcut is critical on nights where all four of my kids are going in different directions. They might be going to Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Tae Kwon Do, Gymnastics, and soccer all in one evening. That is the nature of our lives with four very active kids.
Being a successful parent with several kids means getting creative. Being a successful entrepreneur means being doubly creative and frugal with my time. One example is that for parent’s night at the kids’ school, only one of us goes. The same is also true of doctor appointments, dentist appointments, and most activities. In fact, only one of us travels with our younger daughter to karate tournaments, because the other parent has to handle the other three kids.
Squeezing extra hours out of a day is a complete necessity for an entrepreneur. That means paying attention to all sorts of details in my life, and figuring out which things are most important to me, and which ones are not.
I have had to figure out what things I can outsource, and which things I must do myself, and take all kinds of shortcuts to get similar results. Amazon Prime is my friend.
I’m a big believer in keeping things simple, and focusing on keeping my activities productive. For instance, I don’t watch TV, or do things that don’t serve my purposes, like taking care of myself emotionally or physically. I might occasionally engage in serving my children cereal for dinner to achieve my results.
What about you? How do you get more hours out of your day?
