How Women Can Build Leadership Skills and Excel

"How Women Can Build Leadership Skills and Excel" Women

~by Anica Oaks~

Women have long fought against the “glass ceiling” in business that makes it much more difficult for them to obtain upper management positions than their male counterparts. But by taking some steps to self-evaluate and build leadership skills, women can put themselves in the best position to be extremely successful in the workplace.

Join a Professional Organization

No matter your career choice or field, there is a professional organization dedicated to it. These organizations hold events, offer professional training, and provide great networking opportunities. It’s easy to see how this is beneficial.

By being able to talk to other professionals in your industry, attending continuing career training seminars and going to events that teach leadership skills, you can pick up a lot of beneficial tips. There are plenty of professional organizations specifically dedicated to helping women in business excel as well.

Seek Further Education

If your current level of education has seen you stuck in your career, obtaining further education might be a good option. Online learning has made it easier than ever for busy adults to obtain an education in everything from an in-campus nursing program to an online MPA degree. It doesn’t have to be a degree either; many certification programs or classes are available, some at no charge. It’s critical not to hold yourself back — if you have a career dream, then work to achieve it!

Invest in a Hobby

Activities outside of work are a fantastic place for women to gain and hone skills needed to be successful. At times, some women are more careful and may lack the outer confidence needed to turn heads. Getting involved in a hobby, charity, or volunteer work can go a long way towards building your confidence and leadership skills because you can loosen up and not feel such intense pressure. Many organizations are always in need of help and talented leaders, so you can help out a lot of good causes as well.

Learn How to Present Yourself

Typically, when people are nervous, it shows. There are ways, however, to master your body and put yourself at ease, which will give you a confidence boost and allow you to be much more successful at work.

Most typical advice for how to do this, however, is not particularly helpful — focusing on controlling certain things about your appearance, like your handshake, doesn’t do anything to enhance your overall disposition. You have to find ways to mentally put yourself at ease so you’ll look the part. There are a number of traits you should also work on building that will make success much easier.

Women often get a lot of conflicting advice about how to succeed in the workplace, but confidence, education, and involvement are all great places to start. By trying some of these strategies, women will be much better equipped to excel as leaders and find workplace success.
