How’s Your Lifestyle Working for You?

October 31, 2014

by Susan McGuire

Lifestyle… What does this mean to you?

Everywhere I turn I hear the word “Lifestyle”. It seems to be one of the latest buzz words. But what does it mean? Unfortunately, it has come to mean whatever the person or business wants it to mean. I recently heard about a lifestyle center that was going to be built in the area. Being a Health & Lifestyle Coach, I assumed it would be about healthy living, fitness, nutrition and the like. But it turns out that this particular developer was using the term to describe a place for entertainment.

While socializing and being active are certainly components of your lifestyle, the word means so much more, and understanding the importance of a healthy lifestyle can change your life for the better.

Here’s a definition that works for me.

Lifestyle: The way a person lives to one’s own choosing; the choices one makes everyday about everything.

In fact, your lifestyle is everything you do and choose as part of your daily routine:

  • Food you eat
  • Products you use
  • Time and priority management
  • Quality and quantity of Sleep
  • Career choices
  • Physical activity levels
  • Spirituality
  • Relationships
  • Your thoughts, emotions, behaviors and habits

Just as with anything worthwhile, when it comes to lifestyle, quality matters.

The fact that 80% of risk factors for leading causes of death are behavior related, means that 80% of your health is driven by lifestyle. And since genetics accounts for only 5% of your cancer risk. 95% of your risk is attributable to environmental factors and lifestyle.

You have control of your lifestyle, and ultimately of your own health.

Your lifestyle is your choice.

What can you do today, right now, to improve your lifestyle?

It’s not realistic to change all of your habits and routines all at once. It’s much more realistic to start by taking one step at a time. A good way to start is to change your way of thinking. For example, remind yourself that healthy eating is a lifestyle choice, and a gift to yourself. By eating healthier you can ultimately enjoy the lifestyle you desire.
