I’ll be the first person to admit, I’m not perfect. I make mistakes. I definitely make more mistakes than I would like. Sometimes, it’s frankly humiliating. What I do when I make those mistakes is apologize first. Then I try to figure out damage control. In short, I own my mistakes. You should own your mistakes, too.
It is a matter of personal integrity. We all make mistakes, and own up to them. It is even better if you don’t have to have your toes held to the fire to apologize.
Apologize, explain, and develop a strategy for dealing with the problem. Then work to figure out how it happened, and move to put measures in place to avoid making the same mistake next time.
