The modern work landscape is shifting as more and more Millennials settle into their careers. Also known as Generation Y, these unique professionals are rapidly entering industries that allow them to balance their work-life demands. What’s different about their experience and education is coming into play in many different sectors.

Here are some of the leading breakout industries for young millennial professionals.

Health Care

The field of health care is the fastest growing profession in the U.S. today. As baby boomers retire and the older population continues to grow, there is a corresponding increase in available health care positions. Some of the most popular careers include a variety of nursing positions, such as RN, LPN and APN. However, Millennials tend to prefer certain entry-level health care positions that do not require a full-year degree. These jobs include certified nursing aide (CNA), radiologist and pharmacy technician.

Retail and Wholesale

Retail jobs used to be a standard career starter for those interested in sales, marketing and customer service. However, Millennials with four-year degrees are also interested in working in logistics, procurement and management. Either way, independent Millennials tend to prefer these jobs because there is flexibility and room to advance quickly. For example, most retail and wholesale jobs offer part-time work or full-time telecommuting opportunities. In fact, many digital marketers are freelancers who work from home these days.

Millennials who enter the manufacturing industry aren’t content with performing mundane production duties. Instead, they are drawn towards things like design, engineering and project management. Many states are encouraging local production by offering lower tax rates and other commercial incentives. However, these companies have higher standards when it comes to production, so employees are expected to obtain certifications and possess the right skills. For international companies, there are exciting opportunities to travel and work abroad in foreign facilities. For example, recent graduates with online MBA’s or similar degrees could find themselves living abroad supervising a production plant.

In the past, companies gave key positions to employees with solid training and experience. For example, account managers, business administrators and strategic planners have traditionally been veteran business professionals. However, most industries are struggling to keep up with constant consumer, market and industry changes. When compounded with the steady flow of new technology solutions, companies are now more willing to hire younger professionals who better represent consumer markets. Many Millennials with families are willing to move and resettle in a different state to secure flexible work.

Millennials are revitalizing workforces and business environments through passion for finding meaningful employment and the right work-life balance. These are just a few of the changing and adaptive career fields they are entering.
