How do you distinguish yourself from the competition? It’s interesting. A lot of people see an overcrowded market as something to be totally avoided. Others see it as an opportunity, as there are plenty of fish to be had. I will admit that I personally fall into the latter category. As a business coach, I’ve found that there are many, many, many business consultants and coaches out there. Did I mention that there are a lot of them?
So, how do you stand out in a field that is quite literally filled with competitors?
The answer is quite simple, but it’s fairly hard to do. You show up as yourself, consistently. Everything you do has to be true to your mission, and you have to stick with it. You have to put yourself out there and build relationships with people. The faster you can get people onto the phone with you, and start following them, the faster you’ll get clients for your business.
How do you stand out?
You tell your story, and your “why”. Develop your own style of marketing and posting on social media. What is unique about you? Play up that difference. Play up your unique strengths so that you can stand out in a crowd.
As for me, I stand out because I’m very skilled at marketing, sales, and social media. I also have an MBA from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business. And I’ve started other successful businesses in the past and have been able to sell them.
It’s all about what makes you unique and different, and what your experience is, what your personality is, and working within that particular framework.
Some ideas to help you stand out as yourself:
1. Tell your story about why you got into the business
2. What is your pertinent experience?
3. Who do you work with?
4. What services do you provide?
5. Do you have a quirky hairstyle, or a pink pig? (I’m the one with the green hair and large pink stuffed pig). What things make you, well, you?
6. Do you like videos? Then do videos and let yourself shine..
Every step you take to stand out as yourself will set you apart in a very crowded business environment.
