True Confessions of an Entrepreneur – My House is Messy

~by Haley Lynn Gray~

Did you ever expect to read about confessions of an entrepreneur?

Well, I have a little confession to make. You may have noticed that I post lots of pictures, but very selected pictures of the inside of my home. There is a reason for that. See, while we keep our house relatively clean, it is not necessarily neat. In fact, my current office needs some serious sorting and de-cluttering, in part because I’m still dealing with stuff from my parents. Add in some Girl Scout crafts, a couple of thriving companies, and the need to get different furniture, which will actually store all of the crafting stuff I have, and you know, it’s a wee bit messy.

My kids are bathed, the kitchen is clean (the sink is actually empty and clean at the moment), and we take out the garbage regularly. We aren’t hoarders, but the fact of the matter is this – I work a lot of hours. There are only 24 hours in a day, and I have to decide how to spend my time. I mostly decide to spend it on my businesses and on my kids (family first, business second!). That means that other things that are lower priority like, oh, taking out the recycling before the bin is entirely full just aren’t that big of a deal to me.

See, life is about priorities. I know that there are some things which absolutely must happen. Bills have to be paid. Trash has to be thrown out. Laundry has to be done in a timely manner. Certain things aren’t optional. Making the craft supplies look beautiful? Not so important. And that’s OK. On a pretty regular basis I deal with the fact that there are always more things to do than I have time for. It’s a question of priorities. Getting paid work done, maybe a nap here and there so I can recharge my batteries, and going out for ice cream with the kids. Those are my priorities. It’s about doing the important stuff, and letting the rest of it slide.

So, please come on over, and let’s have a chat, and hang out, but please don’t notice the mess. Okay?
